Biography

Heiko Riemer is currently research assistant at the University of Cologne where he received his M.A. (1996) and Ph.D. (1999) in Prehistoric Archaeology. From 1997 to 2007 he worked as research assistant for the Cologne Collaborative Research Centre ACACIA in the deserts of Egypt and Libya. His main foci of research are Holocene hunter-gatherers and herders, and the development of early complex societies, as well as landscape and environmental archaeology of arid zones. Special topics are animal dung and the archaeology of ancient desert roads.
He is member of the ‘Committee of the Later Prehistory of Northeast Africa’ (since 2006); and member of the ‘Scientific Board of the International Conference of Pre- and Early Dynastic Egypt’ (since 2007). From 1999 until 2004 he was executive editor of the German professional journal ‘Archäologische Informationen’.
